The MLB draft concludes on Tuesday with rounds 11-20. The Phillies drafted three college pitchers, two college outfielders, two high school pitchers and two high school outfielders during Day 2 of the draft of Monday. You can learn more about these draft selections here.
Round 11 – No. 325: Andrew Baker, pitcher, Chipola College (Florida)
The Phillies are going with another arm from junior college. He had a 3.45 ERA with 92 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings in his second season at Chipola.
Round 12 – No. 355: T.J. Rumfield, first baseman, Virginia Tech
Rumfield started all 52 games for the Huskies, splitting time between first base and designated hitter. He led his team in RBIs (37) and walks (26) and ranked second in hits (64), doubles (12), home runs (7). You’ll like the look of this.
Round 13 – No. 385: Jared Carr, outfielder, Shepherd University (West Virginia)
Carr, a 2021 First-Team All-PSAC East selection, will head to Philadelphia with a .396 career batting average to his name. In 106 games at Shepherd, he posted 20 home runs, 100 RBIs, 125 runs scored, and a 1.140 OPS.
Round 14 – No. 415: Jose Valadez-Acuna, outfielder, Veterans Memorial HS (Texas)
For the second straight pick, the Phillies add a left-handed outfielder. Valadez-Acuna, a Texas Tech commit, recorded a 94 mph exit velo at Perfect Game. While he is listed as an outfielder, he had quite the high school career as a pitcher as well.
Edit: Phillies scouting director Brian Barber told reporters Tuesday afternoon that Valdez-Acuna was mistakenly announced as an outfielder. He’s a left-handed pitcher.
Round 15 – No. 445: Matt Osterberg, pitcher, St. Cloud State (Minnesota)
The Phillies are adding a left-handed arm. In his last season at St. Cloud State, Osterberg struck out 70 hitters in 50 innings. His performance in the Northwoods League this summer further boosted his draft stock.
Round 16 – No. 475: Ty Collins, pitcher, Glendale College (California)
The Phillies land a six-foot-three pitcher in Round 16. Collins is the second junior college arm of the day for the Phillies.
Round 17 – No. 505: Alex Garbrick, pitcher, University of South Carolina Upstate
Garbrick transferred to USC Upstate for his fifth year of eligibility after four years at Morehead State. The 6-foot-1 righty made 14 starts in 2021, punching out 74 and walking 29 in 66.1 innings. His 3.39 ERA was a significant improvement from his 5.76 career mark before the transfer.
Round 18 – No. 535: Malik Binns, pitcher, Benedictine University at Mesa
Binns compiled a 6.05 ERA across 15 appearances in 2021, striking out 55 batters and walking 36 in 55 innings. There’s no questioning that the Phillies are intrigued by his size; the righty stands at 6-foot-7, 250 pounds. A promising basketball player in high school, Binns elected to pursue baseball instead — in part due to his velocity, which can reach the mid-to-high 90s.
Round 19 – No. 565: Seth Halvorsen, pitcher, University of Missouri
Halvorsen also struggled with his control at times, walking 57 in 72 innings in 2021 before announcing his transfer to Tennessee in June. The right-hander began his career as a two-way player but transitioned to pitching full-time, perhaps because of his promising stuff:
Round 20 – No. 595: Cam Wynne, pitcher, University of Nebraska
The Phillies conclude their 2021 Draft with their 13th pitcher selected. Wynne, a reliever for the Cornhuskers, put together a 3.12 ERA in 2021, allowing just six hits in 17.1 innings. Another tall, projectable righty, Wynne stands at 6-foot-6 and has hit as high as 98 mph.
