With the first place New York Mets hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates in a doubleheader at Citi Field, Saturday’s contest against the Boston Red Sox is as close to a must-win as it gets for the Phillies.
The good thing is that the Phillies are off to an excellent start. Leadoff hitter Jean Segura crushed a 3-2 sinker over The Green Monster in left field to give the Phillies a 1-0.
It’s his first home run since May 21, 2021. Ironically enough, that home run came against today’s starter Martín Pérez. It was his third career home run off Pérez. All three of his homers off the Red Sox lefty went at least 400 feet.
Alec Bohm, who came into this game with four singles off Pérez, launched another ball over the wall to expand the Phillies’ lead to three. It was his first home run off of an actual pitcher since May 6.
No lead is safe against a lineup as dangerous as Boston’s. Xander Bogaerts got in the fun and crushed a ball over the Monster to cut the deficit to two.
