White Sox acquire former Phillie César Hernández in trade
Former Phillie César Hernández has been traded from Cleveland to the Chicago White Sox, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
The 31-year-old second baseman has been pretty good for Cleveland this season, slashing .231/.307/.431 with 18 home runs and 47 RBIs. His previous career high in home runs was 15 back in 2018. Cleveland will receive Double-A left hander Konnor Pilkington from the White Sox in exchange for Hernández, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
Hernández was non-tendered by the Phillies following the 2019 season. He was slated to make over $10 million in his final year of arbitration eligibility. At the time, the Phillies preferred to move Scott Kingery back to second base, his natural position. Hernández signed a one year, $6.25 million contract with Cleveland in December 2019 and was re-signed at a rate of $5 million for one year.
Hernández will slot into the White Sox lineup as their everyday second baseman. He has a $6 million club option for 2022.
