Former Philadelphia Phillies starter Jake Arrieta has been placed on unconditional release waivers by the Chicago Cubs, ending his second stint with the team and calling into question his future in the sport.
Arrieta returned to the Cubs — five years after helping them to win a World Series — this past offseason on a one-year/$6 million deal. The former National League Cy Young Award winner had a 6.88 ERA and 6.12 FIP across 86 1/3 innings in 2021.
In what will turn out to be his final start with the Cubs, Arrieta allowed 11 hits and eight earned runs across four innings against the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday evening. After the game, he questioned a reporter’s decision to wear a face mask:
Arrieta spent the previous three seasons with the Phillies, having signed a three-year/$75 million pact with the team ahead of the 2018 season. In three years as a Phillie, Arrieta posted a 22-23 record with a 4.36 ERA and 4.55 FIP across 352 2/3 innings.
Remember, when Arrieta became a free-agent after the 2017 season, he was reportedly targeting a six or seven-year deal initially. Both the Phillies and Cubs are probably very thankful that they didn’t come close to meeting that asking price.
