Just days after infielder Daniel Brito suffered a medical emergency on the field, the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs returned to action on Tuesday night, delivering a win as they displayed many reminders of their missing teammate.
IronPigs pitchers handled the Buffalo Bisons offense as Lehigh Valley cruised to a 6-1 victory in its first on field-appearance since Saturday.
The 23-year-old Brito collapsed in the first inning of a game on Saturday at Rochester’s Frontier Field. The remainder of the series was postponed as Brito stayed at a nearby hospital for surgery and medical evaluation.
The Philadelphia Phillies, Lehigh Valley’s major-league affiliate, issued a statement before the game on Brito’s condition.
“We are pleased to report that Daniel Brito is currently in stable condition,” the team said. “He continues to undergo medical testing with his girlfriend and his mother, who has arrived from Venezuela, by his side.”
Brito’s jersey and hat hung in the IronPigs third-base dugout, while his helmet, cleats and glove sat on the seat below.
Players had also written Brito’s No. 29 and last name in silver ink on their navy blue hats as they took the field for the game.
Right-hander Adonis Media started on the mound for Lehigh Valley in his second start off the injured list, beginning a fairly dominant night for the IronPigs pitching. He threw two innings and allowed no baserunners.
Julian Garcia relieved Medina, surrendering two hits and a walk but not giving up a run in two innings. Braden Zarbnisky then threw a perfect fifth and sixth inning.
Left-handers Braeden Ogle and Jeff Singer both threw scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, respectively. Mike Adams allowed the first Bisons run, but closed out the win for Lehigh Valley.
The IronPigs offense posted a strong performance as well, kicking things off with a three-run third inning. Charlie Tilson hit an RBI double down the third-base line, Jorge Bonifacio lofted a sacrifice fly to center and Mickey Moniak drove in another run with a double to right to put Lehigh Valley ahead 3-0 early.
Lehigh Valley scored two more in the fourth on a Sal Gozzo RBI infield single and a Tilson RBI single to left.
Gozzo knocked in another insurance run with his second infield single and third hit of the game in the eighth, extending the lead to 6-0.
That set up Adams to throw the ninth inning. Buffalo’s Christian Colón hit an RBI single to bring the score to 6-1, but Adams stranded two other baserunners to finish off the Bisons on an emotional night.
