Three Philadelphia Phillies affiliates had multiple games postponed during the latest week of the minor-league season as the teams dealt with serious non-baseball situations.
The Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs had one game suspended and two postponed in Rochester after one of their players suffered a medical emergency on the field. The Low-A Clearwater Threshers had the final three games of its series against the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels postponed as the team dealt with a COVID-19 situation within the Threshers organization.
The Florida Complex League Phillies, who also play in Clearwater, also saw postponements due to the situation at the complex.
The IronPigs have a record of 34-31 at this point in the season; the Threshers have a 37-37 record; the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils are 30-48; the High-A Jersey Shore BlueClaws are 36-42; the FCL Phillies are 10-6.
IronPigs Brito suffers medical emergency
IronPigs infielder Daniel Brito suffered a medical emergency during the first inning of Saturday’s game against the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field. The game — the first of a doubleheader — was suspended, and Game 2 was postponed. Sunday’s game was ultimately postponed as well.
The Phillies announced Saturday that Brito was sent to a Rochester hospital and underwent surgery. Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported on Sunday that Brito had a second surgery. The Phillies have not given any other details on his condition.
Lehigh Valley issued a brief statement on Twitter following the postponement of Sunday’s game.
“The IronPigs send our thoughts and prayers to Daniel Brito and his family as he continues to undergo medical evaluation in Rochester,” the team said.
Lehigh Valley is scheduled to play on Tuesday night at its home Coca-Cola Park against the Buffalo Bisons.
Clearwater deals with COVID situation
After winning two of its first three games, Clearwater had the remainder of its series against Fort Myers postponed “for additional testing and contact tracing of members of the Threshers organization.”
The Threshers game on Tuesday night has also been postponed for the same reasons, while their game on Wednesday is currently scheduled to be played. The team has not played since this past Thursday.
Ortiz earns promotion to Reading
Outfielder Jhailyn Ortiz earned a big promotion on Saturday, being sent to Reading from Jersey Shore. The 22-year-old slugger then showed his power rather quickly at Reading’s hitter-friendly FirstEnergy Stadium.
Ortiz went 0-for-4 on Saturday, but homered for his first Double-A hit on Sunday. He also added two singles, a walk and another run scored in the game.
He now has 20 home runs on the minor-league season in 76 games.
Williams saves game for Jersey Shore
Center fielder Corbin Williams made brilliant catch for the BlueClaws on Sunday to help save the game.
Up 4-3 over the Brooklyn Cyclones with one out in the ninth inning, Williams dashed to his right and dove to catch a fly ball that almost certainly would’ve driven in a run to tie the game.
Jersey Shore held on to get the final out for the win.
