Ronald Torreyes is having an excellent season with the Phillies. Whether he’s filling in at shortstop or up at the plate with the game on the line, Torreyes always seems to find a way to come through for his team.
The non-roster invitee turned indispensable utility infielder is one of 30 preliminary winners of the 2021 Heart and Hustle Award. The award has been given out annually since 2005 and “honors active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and traditions of the game.”
The voting process consists of 30 committees made up entirely of Major League Baseball Players Association Alumni. Each club has their own committee of members who have ties to the team whose players they are voting on. At the end of the season, alumni and active players come together to vote for the final winner of the award. Roy Halladay was voted the overall winner of the 2010 Heart and Hustle Award.
Past Phillies nominees include J.T. Realmuto (2019), César Hernández (2018), Freddy Galvis (2017), Andrés Blanco (2016), Chase Utley (2015, 2014, 2013, 2009, 2008, 2007), Carlos Ruiz (2012), Roy Halladay (2011, 2010) and Aaron Rowand (2006).
Manager Joe Girardi summed up Torreyes’ mentality in April.
“He’s a baseball player,” Girardi said. “He knows how to do so many different things. If you’re just watching him work everyday, he gets ground balls everywhere. He runs around in the outfield. He catches fly balls. He’s always prepared and when you have a guy like that, you never worry about him. He may not play for two weeks and you know that he’s going to be prepared to play wherever you put him. That’s the bottom line and he’s going to keep himself ready offensively too. He’s going to take a ton of swings. He’s going to work in the cage. He’s just always ready.”
