New York Mets fans are well-represented at Game 2 of the Phillies-Mets series at Citizens Bank Park this weekend. They showed up in droves, particularly to the second deck beyond left field.
Had they sat in right field instead, they would’ve had quite the view of a couple long home runs courtesy of the home team in the fifth inning.
Brad Miller got the party started — and the home run hat off its shelf — with a long 437-foot blast into the visitors’ bullpen to lead off the inning. It was Miller’s 11th homer of the season and the first real blemish on the line of Tylor Megill, who began the game with four one-hit frames.
Alec Bohm doubled to center field immediately after, but when a walk and a couple outs initially left him at second, it looked like the Phillies would miss an opportunity to pile on.
They didn’t. Odúbel Herrera got in on the fun, cranking a big fly three feet shorter but one deck higher than Miller’s to put the Phillies up 4-0. It was Herrera’s eighth homer of the season and came on a 95-mph low-and-in fastball from Megill on the first pitch of the at bat.
Sometimes, the best offense starts with good defense, and that’s how the fifth inning played out. JD Hammer conceded a one-out double to Megill with the game still tied, but he eventually escaped when Bohm knocked down a 109-mph shot from Pete Alonso before firing to first and barely recording the out.
“That is picking up your team,” Jimmy Rollins said on the NBC Sports Philadelphia
broadcast after Herrera’s home run. It certainly was.
