Brewers flip the script on Phillies with dominant shutout victory

Final Score: Brewers 10, Phillies 0

Inconsistency has been a recurring theme of the 2021 Philadelphia Phillies season. In a reversal of roles, the Phillies followed up their 12-0 Labor Day victory with a 10-0 loss in Game 2 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Most of the damage was done in the third and sixth innings. The Brewers scored three against Phillies starter Aaron Nola and knocked him out of the game after just five innings.

After scoring 12 runs Monday, the Phillies couldn’t generate any offense against Brewers starter Eric Lauer, who tossed seven shutout innings. Even after his exit, the Phillies went down in order on just five pitches in the top of the eighth inning against Hunter Strickland.

Meanwhile, only one Brewers starter went hitless Tuesday evening. The top of the order produced as Kolten Wong, Eduardo Escobar and Christian Yelich combined for six hits and seven RBIs. Lauer helped himself and got on base twice, including an RBI walk against Ramon Rosso in the sixth inning:

Things started to unravel as Rosso would surrender two more runs on top of the walk. Milwaukee did some more damage against Cam Bedrosian and Enyel De Los Santos in the final innings to cap their lead at 10-0.

Philadelphia looked lifeless in every phase of the game and it cost them some ground in the NL East race. Tomorrow, both teams will eye up a series win in the rubber match with two All-Star starting pitchers facing off in Kyle Gibson and Freddy Peralta.

 Starting Pitching Performance

Aaron Nola: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO, 92 pitches

It’s been a rough season for Nola, who cruised through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third. Milwaukee mounted five straight hits and brought three runners across the plate. Outside of that inning, Nola allowed just one hit, but he only lasted five innings total.

Eric Lauer: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 87 pitches

The 26-year-old lefty is easily having the best season of his career. Since the All-Star break, he has posted a 2.73 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and .211 batting average against in seven starts. He has now thrown seven innings in each of his last two starts, with a combined seven hits and one earned run allowed. Tonight’s outing against the Phillies was easily the best of his 2021 campaign.
