Josh Maurer will fill in for Tom McCarthy on Saturday and Sunday’s Philadelphia Phillies broadcasts on NBC Sports Philadelphia, as first noted by Joe McDonald of The Worcester Telegram.
Maurer is currently the play-by-play announcer for the Worcester Woo Sox, who are in their first season as the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Previously, Maurer had been the play-by-play voice of the Pawtucket Red Sox, who had been the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate. A graduate of Lower Merion High School, Maurer has filled in on both television and radio for the Red Sox for seven years.
McCarthy — who has been the lead television voice of the Phillies since Hall of Famer Harry Kalas passed away in April of 2009 — will be calling the Arizona Cardinals-Tennessee Titans game Sunday afternoon for CBS. The 53-year-old will be paired with former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber on the telecast.
When McCarthy was on an NFL preseason assignment in August, his son — Pat — called two games in San Diego. The younger McCarthy is the voice of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Triple-A affiliates of the Phillies. He received tremendous reviews for his work alongside Rubén Amaro Jr. on the telecasts. Pat endorsed Maurer upon the announcement that he would be doing this week’s games:
