MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 players on Sept. 1. Gone are the days where the entire 40-man roster is eligible to play in the big leagues.
While the Phillies’ series finale against the Nationals was postponed to Thursday due to rain, the Phillies made a few moves to round up their roster. They selected the contracts of right-handed pitchers Cam Bedrosian and Ramón Rosso.
To make room on the 40-man roster, Rhys Hoskins (abdomen) was transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. Didi Gregorius was placed on the restricted list. The Phillies shortstop is currently in his home country of Curaçao attending the birth of his child. Players are only allowed to miss a maximum of three games while on the paternity list. The weather has complicated his eventual return to the Phillies roster.
Seranthony Domínguez’s month long rehab stint ended on Wednesday. He was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley as the team believes he is not quite ready to contribute to the big league club. He has given up 15 earned runs in 10 innings while pitching in three different levels of the minor leagues while on his rehab assignment.
Zach Eflin, Andrew Knapp and Luke Williams remain on the COVID-19 IL. Once it’s time for them to be reinstated, they will need to be added back to the 40-man roster.
Bedrosian, 29, signed with the Phillies as a minor league free agent in July. The reliever has a 2.29 ERA across 16 appearances for Lehigh Valley this season. He pitched for the Cincinnati Reds and Oakland Athletics in 2021.
Bedrosian is the son of former Phillies pitcher Steve Bedrosian, who won the National League Cy Young Award in 1987. Per Elias Sports Bureau (via Phillies PR), if Cam were to appear in a major league game for the Phillies, Steve and Cam Bedrosian would be the first ever father-son duo to pitch for the same team with one of the two winning a Cy Young Award with said team.
Rosso, 25, pitched out of the Phillies bullpen in 2020 and 2021. He was designated for assignment by the team in May and hasn’t exactly excelled in Triple-A. He has a 4.50 ERA in 28 innings for the IronPigs. The Phillies could use Rosso as a multi-inning reliever.
