John Kruk became a color commentator on NBC Sports Philadelphia‘s coverage of Phillies games in 2017, replacing Matt Stairs, who was hired as the team’s hitting coach.
But while Kruk was a .300 career hitter, don’t expect the Phillies Wall of Famer to try his hand at being a hitting coach.
MLB.com‘s Todd Zolecki reported Sunday that the Phillies have fired hitting coach Joe Dillon after two seasons. A fan responded to Zolecki’s tweet breaking the news by suggesting that Kruk should replace Dillon, but the three-time All-Star quickly poured cold water on the idea:
Kruk, 60, currently resides in Florida, so it’s not a real surprise that he doesn’t want to uproot his life to become a coach, especially considering that he’s never shown an interest in coach, as far as we can tell. On top of that, Kruk has had a decorated career in media, and as Stairs can attest, working on television is a much more stable job than working as a hitting coach.
