The big story in Major League Baseball right now is the league’s first work stoppage in 26 years. The owners unanimously voted to lockout the players on Wednesday.
Before the clock ran out on the last collective bargaining agreement, the Phillies signed one last player to a major league contract.
Late Wednesday, the Phillies signed switch hitting infielder Johan Camargo to a one-year deal. Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors reported that the deal is worth $1.4 million guaranteed.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated right-handed pitcher Adonis Medina for assignment. Medina, a former Phillies top prospect, was out of minor league options.
Camargo, 27, was non-tendered by the Atlanta Braves. He played in just 15 games this season in the majors and went 0-for-16. In 386 at-bats in Triple-A, Camargo slashed .326/.401/.557 with 19 home runs and 67 RBIs. His best season of his career came in 2018, when he hit 19 home runs and had a .806 OPS in 464 at-bats with the Braves. If the Phillies can get anything close to this type of production, the deal should be a steal.
Of course, the Phillies do hope that Camargo wouldn’t have to play regularly for a long period of time. He essentially replaces Ronald Torreyes on the roster, who played in 112 games in 2021.
Camargo fills the need for a versatile infielder who can provide good defense off the bench. He’s played at least 100 innings in the majors at second base, third base and shortstop as well as just over 100 innings combined in the three outfield spots.
The signing of Camargo is interesting considering that the Phillies usually opt to invite veteran players to spring training to compete for one of the last roster spots. With the signing, Camargo is likely to start next season on the Phillies’ bench, but he does have one minor league option remaining.
Considering that the team has lacked position player depth in recent seasons, it’s a good chance for Camargo to get some regular playing time in 2022.
