Is Shane Victorino interested in joining Phillies radio booth?
In case you missed it, Kevin Frandsen is leaving the Phillies radio broadcast to call Washington Nationals games on television alongside Bob Carpenter for MASN.
According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, Frandsen interviewed for the Nationals gig late last week and was offered the job during the weekend. It could be tough for the Phillies to replace Frandsen on a permanent basis with a little more than two months to go until the scheduled start of the regular season since the radio schedule consists almost entirely of road games. Larry Andersen will continue to call most Phillies home games.
It wouldn’t be surprising if the Phillies take a similar approach as they did when Frandsen, Kevin Stocker and Kevin Jordan all spent time in the booth in 2018 after Andersen’s schedule was reduced.
Almost every notable 2008 Phillie will be vaguely linked to the job, either through fan discussion or cryptic messages on social media. Shane Victorino stirred some speculation on Twitter in the early morning hours on Friday.
Phillies executive vice president Dave Buck told Zolecki that the Phillies are “…looking at all of our options right now.” If Victorino’s interest is genuine and the Phillies are looking to try out different voices before hiring someone permanently, the Flyin’ Hawaiian could get a chance to spend some time in the radio booth, whether it be a guest appearance or a nine-inning game. He was enjoyable to listen to in interviews during his playing days. Maybe that can translate to a new gig with the Phillies for Victorino.
It is entirely possible that Victorino is just playing around. It’s understandable if he doesn’t want to broadcast games. He has a young family and seems content spending his time in Las Vegas and Hawaii. I would be too.
In other news, Victorino and Jimmy Rollins spent some time golfing in the rain this week. Rollins would be another interesting name for the Phillies radio booth, but I would assume he continues making sporadic appearances on NBC Sports Philadelphia
