Ahead of Tuesday’s 1 p.m. ET deadline to exchange arbitration figures, the Philadelphia Phillies and Rhys Hoskins agreed to a one-year/$7.7 million deal, according to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Matt Swartz of MLB Trade Rumors had projected at the outset of the offseason that Hoskins would earn $7.6 million in his second year of arbitration eligibility, so the deal that was reached to avoid a hearing appears to be one that’s fair for both sides.
A fifth-round pick by the Phillies in the 2014 MLB Draft, Hoskins homered 27 times and drove in 71 runs in just 107 games a season ago. During parts of five seasons with the Phillies, the 29-year-old has become perhaps the biggest leader in the clubhouse. A Scott Boras client, Hoskins can become a free agent after the 2023 season.
In addition to Hoskins, both Zach Eflin and José Alvarado are arbitration eligible. We’re still waiting to learn if the Phillies have avoided arbitration with either of those two.
