As the Phillies minor leaguers open up their spring training schedule against the Tigers on Tuesday in Clearwater, the team announced a slew of MiLB signings:

  • Karl Ellison: Ellison, 26, is a former Vanderbilt Commodore. He had a .724 OPS in 2021 with Lake Erie in the Frontier League. Ellison will serve as catching depth in the minor leagues.
  • Joe Genord: The first baseman Genord, 25, spent last season with the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones.
  • Drew Maggi: Maggi, 32, is an 11-year minor league veteran who spent last season with the Triple-A St. Paul Saints, posting a .810 OPS as a utility infielder.
  • James Marvel: Marvel, 28, played four games for the Pirates in 2019. The right hander spent all of 2021 at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he posted a 5.26 ERA in 25 games. He could serve as Triple-A rotation depth, especially if the work stoppage continues into the beginning of the minor league season and minor leaguers on the 40-man roster are still locked out.
  • Aaron Barrett: According to MLB.com, the Phillies are closing in on a minor league deal with Barrett. Barrett, 34, last pitched for the Nationals in 2020 and has a 4.01 ERA in 95 career games in the majors.
  • John Andreoli: Also reported by MLB.com, Andreoli, 31, spent time in the majors with the Mariners, Orioles and Padres as an outfielder.

As previously reported, the Phillies also signed former Rays and Cardinals outfielder Justin Williams to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.
