The Philadelphia Phillies announced Sunday that they’ve traded infielder/outfielder Luke Williams to the San Francisco Giants for minor league infielder Will Toffey and cash considerations.
Williams was designated for assignment on Tuesday, clearing a 40-man roster spot for Nick Castellanos.
The 25-year-old briefly captured the hearts of Phillies fans in 2021. Not only did he end up on third base in his first Major League at-bat after an errant throw on a bunt attempt, but he hit a walk-off home run on June 9:
In totality, Williams was relatively underwhelming in 58 games with the Phillies, slashing .245/.315/.316 with a .631 OPS. He’ll now head to San Francisco, where he’ll become organizational depth.
Meanwhile, the Phillies get Toffey — a 27-year-old that was initially a fourth-round pick of the Oakland Athletics in 2017 — back in return. In 65 games between Double-A and Triple-A a year ago, Toffey slashed .217/.355/.383.
