If you thought that the Philadelphia Phillies — and for that matter, the Milwaukee Brewers — were exaggerating the effect that Ángel Hernández had on Sunday night’s game, there’s now further evidence showing how much the umpire struggled behind the plate.
The authority on such matters, the Twitter account @UmpScorecards, released a rather scathing review of Hernández’s performance on Sunday Night Baseball:
Notably, the most impactful missed call listed is when Kyle Schwarber had a pitch outside the strike zone called as strike three in the bottom of the ninth inning. Rather than walking, Schwarber was sent back to the dugout — rung up on a pitch outside the strike zone for the second time on the night. Before making his way back to the dugout, Schwarber was ejected after slamming both his bat and helmet on the ground and screaming at Hernández:
While much has been made of the Schwarber missed call, the worst call of the night was when Hernández called a strike on Jean Segura in the bottom of the fifth inning that as noted in the tweet above, was 6.47 inches off the plate:
Segura would ultimately pop out, part of an inning where the Phillies wasted a bases-loaded, one-out opportunity. While there’s certainly plenty of blame to be placed on the Phillies, Hernández’s zone — which was both inaccurate and inconsistent — unquestionably factored into them getting shut out by the Brewers Sunday.
