Phillies batter Rockies for second straight night

The Phillies were operating on all cylinders tonight – pitching, offense, defense, even the ballgirl’s chair contributed to another big win against Colorado on a rainy Dollar Dog Night. The team’s propensity to hit with RISP (.296, 3rd in MLB) is finally paying dividends. Meanwhile Zach Eflin posted another solid performance with little resistance from the Rockies’ lineup.

The scoring started in the second inning as Didi Gregorius nubbed a check swing down the third base line to plate Kyle Schwarber. Soon after in the inning, Rockies’ starter German Marquez tossed a wild pitch to catcher Dom Nuñez allowing Alec Bohm to score, and Nuñez promptly returned the favor with a wild pitch right back to Marquez (now covering home) allowing another run to score.
The fourth inning proved pivotal as the Phillies’ bats busted the game wide open behind a Bohm single, Herrera double, Segura single and Hoskins double to make it 7-0. German Marquez was finished after just three and two-thirds innings.
Odubel Herrera added a 2-run homer in the sixth and Charlie Blackmon hit two solo shots for the Rockies.
The Rockies’ defensive miscues were juxtaposed with the Phillies’ strong play in the field. In the third inning, Nick Castellanos made a ballerina-like jumping catch against the out-of-town scoreboard to rob Nuñez of an extra base hit. Alec Bohm contributed with several difficult picks at third.
Add in two stolen bases (to push the Phils to a perfect 5-for-5 this season) and a pinch hit appearance by the left field ballgirl chair and you have a complete team effort to thank for the win.
The Phillies look to make it three wins in a row for the first time this season tomorrow night.

German Marquez: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 1 SO, 1 BB, 1 WP, 80 pitches
This was a night to forget for German Marquez. Trouble started with a 2-run wild pitch in the second inning, two of three unearned runs allowed that inning. Then the Phillies piled it on in the fourth with four well-earned runs as eight batters came to the plate before he was pulled.
Zach Eflin: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 91 pitches
Zach Eflin is certainly becoming a model of consistency with another excellent outing. This was his 28th consecutive start with two walks or fewer. Over those starts, Eflin has allowed only 26 walks in 162.1 IP (2nd best BB/9 ratio behind Clayton Kershaw). With only two hits allowed, the Rockies were unable to get anything going on the basepaths.

Zach Eflin recorded his 500th career strikeout in the second inning, fanning Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon. This was Eflin’s 112th major league game.
