The Philadelphia Phillies released veteran Ronald Torreyes from the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
The minor-league infielder requested the move and it was granted by the team, as reported by The Athletic‘s Matt Gelb.
Torreyes started the 2022 season in Triple-A Lehigh Valley after spending parts of the previous two years in the majors with the Phillies. He was batting .171 through 10 games with the IronPigs.
Last season, the former New York Yankee was thrust into a more regular role after third baseman Alec Bohm and shortstop Didi Gregorius faced struggles and injury. Torreyes was a reliable defender on the left side of the infield, and he came through with some notable timely hits despite his light-hitting reputation. In 112 games, he batted .242/.286/.346 with seven home runs while hitting .321/.398/.482 with runners in scoring position.
The Phillies brought Torreyes back into camp this spring training on a minor-league deal, and he was sent to Lehigh Valley after not making the team. The 29-year-old’s release came a day after the Phillies optioned infield prospect Bryson Stott to Triple-A and selected the contract of outfielder Roman Quinn.
Torreyes, who has a .660 OPS in seven major-league seasons and was in the 86th percentile in outs above average last year, can now sign with a new organization.
