Final Score: Mariners 5, Phillies 4
The Phillies were plagued by defensive mistakes and their bats couldn’t bail them out in a 5-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Philadelphia hit the ball out of the yard three times, but they couldn’t get runners on to make the home runs count.
Although Aaron Nola executed his pitches, he gave up a leadoff single to Adam Frazier, a double to Ty France, a bloop RBI single to Eugenio Suarez, and an infield RBI single to Julio Rodríguez to start off the game. Two runs came around to score in the first inning.
Phillies manager Joe Girardi was ejected in the bottom of the second inning when he protested a safe call at first base that allowed Luis Torrens to score. Rhys Hoskins was charged with an error on the play, even after it was apparent that the runner Adam Fraizer was both out at first and interfered with Hoskins when he yanked the ball out of Hoskins’ glove. The Phillies ended the second inning with a 3-0 deficit and an ejected manager.
The Phillies’ bats had issues with Robbie Ray’s pitching until they got their first hit in the top of the fifth inning when Nick Castellanos broke through with a solo shot. Jean Segura got on base with a one-out walk, went to second on a flyout from Hoskins, went to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a wild pitch.
Rhys Hoskins answered with a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning with one out. In the top of the eighth inning, Harper worked a two-out double after being down 0-2, but he was stranded on second base.
Segura hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to cut the deficit to one, but the Phillies could not finish the comeback and fell to the Mariners 5-4.
Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance
Aaron Nola: 5 1/3 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO, 99 pitches
Aaron Nola’s stuff looked good, and he settled down after the first inning for the most part, but the Mariners put three runs on the scoreboard after two innings. Nola found his strikeout stuff in the second inning and ended the night with six. Nola struggled again with finishing the sixth inning. This time he was pulled with two Mariners on base with only one out.
Robbie Ray: 5 2/3 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 SO, 1 HR, 104 pitches
The Phillies could not solve the 2021 AL Cy Young winner for the most part, as they only got two hits off him–although the first one was a loud home run from Castellanos. The Phillies, however, succeeded in driving up Ray’s pitch count and forced Seattle to pull him before he could finish the sixth inning.
