Scott Franzke will call Thursday’s Phillies game on TV

Philadelphia Phillies radio voice Scott Franzke will call Thursday afternoon’s game against the San Diego Padres on TV with Tom McCarthy slated to miss the game as he attends his daughter’s college graduation, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer noted.

Franzke, 50, has been the radio voice of the Phillies since 2006, but this will mark the first time that he’s called a regular season game on TV, per Breen. Presumably, he’ll work with Rubén Amaro Jr., who is serving as the color commentator for this series. The game will be broadcast on NBC 10.

Meanwhile, Pat McCarthy, the voice of the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs, will fill in for Franzke on SportsRadio 94 WIP‘s radio broadcast. The younger McCarthy called two regular season games against the Padres on television a year ago, working with Amaro. He received strong reviews for his work, and seemingly has a future as major league play-by-play announcer.

It will be interesting to see in the coming years if Pat, 27, sees an expanded role at the major league level. While his father seemingly isn’t leaving TV anytime soon, and the same can be said for Franzke on the radio, it may behoove the Phillies to find a way to get Pat in the major league booth on a more consistent basis moving forward. Todd Kalas, now the play-by-play voice of the Houston Astros, appeared on Phillies broadcasts alongside his father — Hall of Famer Harry Kalas — from 1994 to 1996. Perhaps an arrangement like that will make sense for the Phillies at some point in the not-so-distant future.
