Phillies star Bryce Harper is out indefinitely after suffering a left thumb fracture, per Phillies Nation’s Nathan Ackerman. Harper was hit in the hand with a 97 mph fastball against Blake Snell in the fourth inning of Saturday’s game against the Padres.

Harper was writhing in pain after the pitch. He was taken out of the game immediately and expressed some frustration at Snell.

With Harper out, the Phillies offense is going to have to step up if they plan on staying within striking distance of a playoff spot. There is no other way to put it — it’s a devastating development for the Phillies. Harper, who has a .984 OPS this season, was on track to both make the All-Star Game and be in consideration for a second-straight National League MVP Award. Now, the Phillies will have to play on without him.
