Former Phillies pitcher Héctor Neris was a part of history on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. He threw a scoreless eighth inning of a combined no-hitter by the Houston Astros against the New York Yankees. Starter Cristian Javier struck out 13 over seven scoreless innings. Ryan Pressly threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

It marked the first time in 19 years the Yankees have been no-hit. On June 11, 2003, six Astros pitchers combined to no-hit the Yankees in the Bronx for the first time since 1958. Former Phillies pitchers Roy Oswalt, Brad Lidge and Billy Wagner were part of the combined no-no.

Neris’ inning was far from stress free. He walked two batters and was squeezed on ball four in an at-bat against DJ LeMahieu. A fly ball against Joey Gallo nearly carried over the short porch in right field. Nevertheless, he got the job done.

Neris is in the first season of a two-year, $17 million contract with Houston. He got off to an incredible start, pitching to a 0.56 ERA in his first 17 appearances. He has cooled off since and now has a 3.73 ERA in 2022.

The Phillies will wrap up their season against the Astros in Houston from Oct. 3-5.
