Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, along with boxing legend Bernard Hopkins, will headline the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2022. New inductees include Rollie Massimino, Phil Martelli, David Akers, Ed Bolden and the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers.
Rollins played for the Phillies for 15 seasons and holds the franchise record for hits, surpassing Mike Schmidt for the record in 2014. As a core member of the beloved ’07-’11 Phillies teams, Rollins won four Gold Gloves at shortstop, made three All-Star teams and was a World Series champion in 2008. He also won the National League’s Most Valuable Player Award in 2007, a year in which he joined the 20-20-20 club (20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs).
This is sure to be just one of the many honors Rollins will receive in the coming years. He’s bound to go on the Phillies Wall of Fame one day and could get the call to Cooperstown. Rollins received 9.4% of the vote in his first year on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot in 2022.
Maybe the Phillies could loosen their policy and retire Rollins’ No. 11, regardless of whether or not he gets into the Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony will take place Nov. 3 at Live! Casino in South Philadelphia. Past Phillies honorees include Dallas Green (2021), Charlie Manuel (2016), Dick Allen (2010) and Mike Schmidt (2004).
