Phillies bullpen holds off Nats to take first end of doubleheader
Final: Phillies 5, Nationals 3
The Phillies bullpen stepped up on Friday afternoon, preserving a lead created by some early offensive output against the Washington Nationals.
Connor Brogdon, Seranthony Domínguez and Brad Hand combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings to close out the first end of a doubleheader, 5-3, at Nationals Park.
Philadelphia went up 2-0 to start the game as Nick Castellanos drove in two with a first-inning double, adding two more in the top of the third on an RBI groundout from Odúbel Herrera and run-scoring double by Alec Bohm. Bohm scored another run in the sixth inning on a Washington error.
Phillies starter Ranger Suárez allowed just one run through the first five innings, surrendering third-inning RBI double to Lane Thomas. But he ran into trouble in the sixth as Josh Bell launched a two-run home run to bring the Nats within two.
Brogdon entered with two outs in the sixth to limit the damage, throwing a scoreless seventh as well. Domínguez fired a perfect eighth inning and struck out two batters on the way.
Hand, a veteran with plenty of closing experience, took the ball in the ninth inning. He worked around a leadoff single and a walk to complete the save.
Suárez cruised for most of his outing, but a sixth-inning homer and frustrations with the strike zone finished his day on a low note. The left-hander allowed three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings on six hits while walking three and striking out five.
The Phillies offense was aggressive against Nats starter Joan Adon, putting four runs on the board in the first three innings. The right-hander settled in a bit after that, going two more innings without allowing another run.
