So far in 2022, Mets ace Max Scherzer has surrendered six home runs. Five have come against players in the Phillies organization. On Tuesday, Jhailyn Ortiz of the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils became the latest Phillie to go deep against the future Hall of Famer.
The home run came in the fourth inning of a game against the Rumble Ponies in Binghamton, NY. Scherzer was appearing in his first rehab outing since suffering an oblique strain on May 18. He allowed three hits and two runs across 3 2/3 innings pitched against Reading. Ortiz’s home run came off Scherzer’s 65th and final pitch of the night.
Ortiz, 23, has homered 11 times for Double-A Reading in 2022. He was signed by the Phillies for just over four million at the age of 16 in 2015 and was added to the 40-man roster prior to the Rule 5 Draft deadline last offseason. He’s last on the Phillies depth chart as far as 40-man outfielders go, but it’s possible Ortiz works his way to the big leagues if the need arises.
