The Philadelphia Phillies were among the teams who attended a showcase that veteran reliever Trevor Rosenthal held in South Florida Tuesday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
It’s unclear exactly how many teams attended Rosenthal’s showing, with Salisbury hearing “about 18” watched the righty, while Jon Heyman of Audacy Sports says “14 teams attended.”
The good news is that the 32-year-old sat at 95-96 mph during his session. The bad news is that Rosenthal — who didn’t end up pitching at all for the Oakland Athletics in 2021 because of surgeries on both his right shoulder and right hip — had to end his session with a hamstring cramp. It’s not yet known if the cramp marks something of a setback for Rosenthal, or whether it was just related to the heat.
The National League East was apparently well represented at the showcase. In addition to the Phillies, Craig Mish of SportsGrid relayed that the Miami Marlins attended, as did the New York Mets, per SNY‘s Andy Martino.
Rosenthal has struggled to stay healthy throughout the course of his career, and battled the yips while pitching for the Washington Nationals in 2019. With that said, he was an All-Star for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015 and posted a 1.90 ERA for the Kansas City Royals in 23 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. At the very least, it makes sense for all contending teams to gauge where he’s at and whether he could help their team.
While the Phillies’ bullpen has not been nearly as bad as it was over the prior two seasons — their ERA as a unit is currently 3.99, the 14th-worst mark in the league — president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski still has work to do in getting it to the point of being a playoff-caliber group. Some of that could come from getting better results from internal options like José Alvarado, Corey Knebel and Jeurys Familia. But an outside addition or two wouldn’t hurt either.
