Rhys Hoskins is confident in his catcher.
Hoskins expressed as much to a national audience on Saturday. Mic’d up on the FOX broadcast during the top of the third inning, Hoskins asked three-time American League MVP Mike Trout — who had reached first via a fielder’s choice — if he was planning to steal on J.T. Realmuto. Told that Trout didn’t even have a steal attempt on the season, Hoskins pressed him on it, and (rhetorically) asked whether that moment — with Realmuto behind the dish — was the right time to change that:
Ultimately, it wasn’t. Trout stayed put for five pitches before Jared Walsh’s RBI single advanced him to third.
If it were up to Hoskins, Trout would’ve run. Hoskins had asked the same question of Andrew Velazquez three batters earlier, and even went a step further that time — telling Velazquez that “I kinda hope you do, with J.T.”
Challenge not accepted, which is probably smart of the Angels. Realmuto has thrown out 50% of would-be base stealers this season, which leads baseball.
Besides, they’d already learned their lesson the hard way:
