The Phillies are missing players up-and-down the roster. The likes of Bryce Harper and Jean Segura are not expected to return until late August or early September, but nonetheless, the team could get some significant help once the Miami series rolls around.
In an interview with Gregg Murphy on the Phillies Radio Network pregame show on Tuesday, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said that third baseman Alec Bohm, right-handed pitcher Connor Brogdon and lefties JoJo Romero and Ranger Suárez are all in play to return at some point this weekend against the Marlins.
- Bohm, who is currently on the restricted list, has a dislocated ring finger. It’s the best-case scenario for the Phillies and Bohm, who initially believed that his finger was broken. He could return Friday. “[Medical personnel] snap it back into place at that point and they think by Friday he’s got a real solid chance to play. So a lot of time what they’ll do with this type of injury, they’ll tape that finger next to the one to give it some stability. There’s a real strong feeling he could play on Friday,” Dombrowski said.
- Both Suárez (low back spasm) and Zach Eflin (right knee bruise) threw bullpen sessions on Tuesday, per Dombrowski. Eflin is not expected to return until after the All-Star break, but the team is “hopeful” that Suárez could make his first start since June 29 on Saturday. If Suárez is unable to pitch, Cristopher Sánchez is lined up to start.
- Brogdon (COVID-19 injured list) could rejoin the Phillies in Miami. Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Brogdon is expected to pitch for Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. Brogdon was placed on the COVID-19 IL on June 25. The Phillies will need to open up a 40-man roster spot in order to activate him.
- Ditto for Romero, who is currently on the 60-day injured list after undergoing Tommy John surgery last May. Romero needs to be added back to the 40-man roster on July 14 as his 30-day rehab period is about to expire. On Romero, Brogdon and Suárez, Dombrowski said: “Right now, I feel pretty good that all of them could be available this weekend.”
Johan Camargo (right knee strain) had a chance to return to the team in Toronto, but he continued his rehab on Tuesday as a third baseman in Reading. Nick Maton (right shoulder sprain) had his rehab assignment transferred to Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. It’s unclear when he’ll be back.
