Final Score: Phillies 11, Nationals 0
The calendar flipped to July late last week, but you wouldn’t know that from watching Kyle Schwarber Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Park.
Schwarber — who has won National League Player of the Month for June in back-to-back years — led off with a home run to dead center field in the bottom of the first inning:
An All-Star for the Washington Nationals last season, Schwarber homered for a second time against his former team Tuesday in the bottom of the third inning. This one was a 431-foot shot off Paolo Espino that wasn’t far off from landing in the third deck in right field, territory that only Ryan Howard (x2) has visited:
Elsewhere, Nick Castellanos drove in two runs, while both Alec Bohm and J.T. Realmuto had three RBIs on the evening. Realmuto’s two-run home run in the home half of the fifth was his second blast in as many games:
With the win, the Phillies improve to 43-38. Meanwhile, the lowly Nationals drop to 29-54, and are increasingly in the race for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. The Phillies have taken five of their first six matchups with the Nationals in 2022.
The Phillies will look to clinch a series victory Wednesday evening, with All-Star candidate Aaron Nola slated to square off with Josiah Gray.
