Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper are lone Phillies All-Stars

The Philadelphia Phillies got some good news Sunday evening, and probably a larger chunk of bad news.

Less than an hour after losing to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Phillies learned that left fielder Kyle Schwarber will be part of the National League All-Star team. Schwarber — who signed a four-year/$79 million deal to join the Phillies in March — hit his NL-leading 28th home run Sunday afternoon. This marks the second consecutive year that Schwarber will play in the midsummer classic.

Meanwhile, we learned earlier this week that Bryce Harper was selected as the starting DH for the National League. Because of his fractured left thumb, Harper will not play in the game, and he’s already said he doesn’t plan to attend as he rehabs both the thumb and his right UCL. It’s the seventh All-Star Game selection for Harper, but the first as a Phillie. William Contreras of the Atlanta Braves will start at DH for the senior circuit instead.

Still, the most shocking takeaway here — one we will delve into further in a separate piece — is that neither Zack Wheeler or Aaron Nola has been selected to the game. Both had legitimate cases, and you could argue that Wheeler was the biggest snub in either league.

The 92nd MLB All-Star Game will take place at Dodger Stadium on July 19 at 8 p.m. ET.
