Phillies sweep Marlins in Miami for first time since 2010

MIAMI — A dominant start from Aaron Nola paired with a four-run fourth inning helped the Philadelphia Phillies to sweep the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park for the first time since the stadium opened in 2012.

With J.T. Realmuto on first base, Alec Bohm scalded a double to right-center field off of Marlins’ starter Trevor Rogers in the top of the fourth inning. Third base coach Dusty Wathan was aggressive in sending Realmuto, and was rewarded when the relay to home plate was off line:

Matt Vierling would then switch places with Bohm, doubling down the left field line to bring home another run. Two batters later, Yairo Muñoz delivered the biggest blow of the game, a two-run shot that traveled 386 feet:

Four runs of support was more than enough for Nola, who struck out 10 batters Sunday for the 25th time in his career. He lasted 8 1/3 innings Sunday, with José Alvarado coming on for the final two outs of a weekend sweep in the 305.

The last time that the Phillies swept the Fish in Miami, they were still called the Florida Marlins and playing at what is now known as Hard Rock Stadium. It was Sept. 13-15 of 2010, and the Phillies got wins from Joe Blanton, Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay.

With the victory Sunday, the Phillies will head into the All-Star Break with a 49-43 record and a +62 run differential. Meanwhile, the Marlins are 43-48, and end their first half on a pretty sour note after missing out on a chance to climb back into the Wild Card race this weekend.

Kyle Schwarber will participate in the Home Run Derby Monday night, and with Bryce Harper injured, he’ll be the team’s lone All-Star Game representative Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

The Phillies will begin the second half of their season Friday evening, as they welcome the lowly Chicago Cubs to Citizens Bank Park. Kyle Gibson will get the ball for the Phillies, and he’ll be opposed by Justin Steele.

Aaron Nola pitched into the ninth inning for the second time this season, going 8 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out 10 batters. After a disappointing 2021 season, Nola had an excellent first half, posting a 3.13 ERA, 2.80 FIP and a 3.6 fWAR across 126 2/3 innings.

Trevor Rogers gave up seven hits and four earned runs over six innings, with much of the damage against him coming in the fourth inning. A year after making the All-Star team and finishing runner up in the National League Rookie of the Year Award voting, Rogers has a 5.46 ERA.
