Aaron Nola tosses complete game shutout as Phillies sweep Reds

Kyle Schwarber hit a majestic home run, Edmundo Sosa drove in three runs and Aaron Nola pitched a complete-game shutout to help the Philadelphia Phillies secure a four-game sweep over the Cincinnati Reds.
Schwarber got the scoring started in the home half of the third inning with a solo home run that traveled an estimated 451 feet, ultimately hitting off the batter’s eye in center field:
Meanwhile, Sosa got the start at third base on a night off for Alec Bohm. While known more for his glove work, Sosa pushed a run across with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, before adding two insurance runs with a seventh-inning single:
That was more than enough for Nola, who limited the Reds to just five hits in a complete-game shutout that saw him strike out 11 batters.
It was a much-needed performance from Nola, with a bullpen that’s been hit hard by the injury bug of late, and the Phillies placing Zack Wheeler on the injured list Thursday evening.
With the win, the Phillies improve to 70-55. The 2021 Phillies didn’t win their 70th game until Sept. 5, despite the season starting earlier than it did this year.
Meanwhile, the Reds fall to 48-75, which isn’t even the worst record in their own division. The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the cellar of the National League Central with a 47-77 record.
With Bryce Harper set to make his return, the Phillies will welcome those Pirates to Citizens Bank Park for a three-game weekend set beginning Friday.

- Justin Dunn gave the Reds a quality outing Thursday, going six innings and limiting the Phillies to four hits and two earned runs. The 26-year-old did walk two batters, but he also struck out five.
- Aaron Nola’s complete-game shutout improves him to 9-10 with a 3.08 ERA, 2.67 FIP and 4.9 fWAR in 2022. It’s safe to assume the Phillies will be picking up his $16 million option for 2023.
