Final: Phillies 6, Pirates 0
J.T. Realmuto cleared the bases with a three-run double in the bottom of the first inning, and that was more than enough for Kyle Gibson as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday evening.
After Gibson set the Pirates down in order in the top of the first inning, Rhys Hoskins, Alec Bohm and Bryce Harper all reached base in the home half of the frame. Realmuto — who has been one of the best players in baseball since July 1 — promptly brought all three of his teammates home on one swing:
Rhys Hoskins and Alec Bohm each drove in a run in the bottom of the second inning, before Nick Castellanos — on the night his T-shirt was given out at Citizens Bank Park — hit a 402-foot home run in the third inning:
Gibson cruised with plenty of run support, scattering six hits over seven shutout innings. It was the fifth time this season that the 34-year-old pitched seven or more innings.
With the win, the Phillies improve to 72-55, having won six games in a row. Meanwhile, the Pirates drop to 47-79, putting them firmly in the race for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, along with the Oakland Athletics, Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds.
Noah Syndergaard will get the ball for the Phillies Sunday, as they look to clinch both the series and season sweep over the Buccos.
