Phillies blow 7-run lead in ugly loss to Diamondbacks

Final Score: Diamondbacks 13, Phillies 7

Shield your eyes from this one.

The Phillies had a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. Heck, starter Ranger Suárez didn’t even allow a hit the first time through the order.

Then things got ugly in a hurry. The Diamondbacks scored six runs each in the fourth and fifth innings. The offense did next to nothing against the Arizona bullpen and the end result was the ugliest pitching performance of the season for the Phillies.

After getting the first batter in the fourth to ground out, Suárez allowed the next four batters to reach base safely. A strikeout to Jake McCarthy gave the Phillies a chance to get out of the inning with just two runs across, but a costly miscue on a ground ball to Jean Segura extended the inning and scored another run. The next four runs that scored that inning were unearned for Suárez.

Two batters later, Carson Kelly cleared the bases with a double down the right-field line. Suddenly, the Phillies’ seven-run lead was cut to one. Cristopher Sánchez recorded the final out of the inning.

A double and two walks an inning later loaded the bases for the Diamondbacks with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Sánchez struck out the first batter Stone Garrett, but hit Jake McCarthy in the back with a pitch to even the game at seven apiece.

The debuting Corbin Carroll, one of the top prospects in baseball, delivered the dagger with a two-run double to center field.

The next man out of the bullpen Andrew Bellatti allowed a single and walked three batters before recording the final out of the inning.

Command was an issue across the board for Phillies pitchers. The five Phillies pitchers that appeared in the game combined to throw 179 pitches. They also tied a season-high in total batters walked with eight.

And after scoring seven runs on 11 hits through the first four innings, the Phillies did not a record a base hit from innings five through nine.

The loss drops the Phillies to 72-57. With a Brewers win against the Pirates, the Phillies are just three games clear of a postseason berth. They’ll have to regroup on Tuesday with Aaron Nola going up against Zac Gallen, who has a 27 1/3 inning scoreless streak.

Shibe Vintage Sports Notes

  • The Diamondbacks’ comeback was the largest in the franchise’s young history.
  • The eighth inning home run Brad Hand allowed to Garrett was the first home run he allowed this season.
  • Thomson told reporters, including Matt Gelb of The Athletic, that Nick Castellanos is dealing with turf toe. It’s possible he could be out of the lineup for a few days.
  • The Phillies announced earlier today that outfielder Bradley Zimmer, who was designated for assignment on Saturday, was claimed off waivers by his former club the Toronto Blue Jays.
