Per multiple reports, the Phillies are giving up arguably their best position player prospect for a center fielder.

The Phillies acquired Brandon Marsh from the Los Angeles Angels for Double-A catcher Logan O’Hoppe. Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia was the first to link Marsh to the Phillies. Robert Murray of FanSided was the first to report the terms of the trade.

Marsh, 24, is slashing .226/.284/.353 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs in 2022. Once a highly regarded prospect, his career has yet to take off so far in Los Angeles. The Phillies obviously see something in Marsh and hope they can fix him up and make him into a reliable center fielder, something the Phillies have been unable to find for years. Marsh, a left-handed bat, could platoon with Vierling in center field. He is not eligible to become a free agent until 2028.

O’Hoppe, 22, has a .888 OPS with Double-A Reading this season. The former 23rd round pick quickly rose to the top of the prospect rankings after impressing both at the plate and at the catcher’s position in 2021.

Multiple Phillies beat writers are reporting that center fielder Odúbel Herrera has been designated for assignment.

We’ll have more on this story as details become available.
