Final: Braves 5, Phillies 2
The Atlanta Braves have swept the Phillies, and it didn’t look particularly close the entire series. The good news? Philadelphia still occupies a playoff spot. The bad news? They need to figure it out soon. The Phillies offense has been quiet and the bullpen, reliable for most of the season, is starting to crater.
The game was a pitcher’s duel for the most part. Atlanta starter Spencer Strider had a no-hitter going for 5 2/3 innings until an Alec Bohm solo home run broke it up. Phillies starter Bailey Falter threw the ball exceptionally as well, allowing only one run on a Robbie Grossman double in the third inning over 4 2/3 innings pitched.
After the Phillies tied it up in the top of the sixth inning, the Braves immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning with a William Contreras home run that gave Atlanta a 2-1 advantage.
The Phillies put two men on in the seventh inning with one out but failed to score. Later, in the bottom of the inning, Sam Coonrod gave up a solo homer to Robbie Grossman and an RBI single to Austin Riley to make it 4-1.
Philadelphia gave up another run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Marcell Ozuna double. The Phillies answered with a solo homer by J.T. Realmuto, but they dropped the game 5-2.
Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance
Bailey Falter: 4 2/3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 76 pitches
Falter did what the Phillies needed him to do and kept his team in the ballgame. Unfortunately, the offense couldn’t come through. Falter could be a sneaky Game 3 starter for the Phillies if they make the playoffs.
Spencer Strider: 6 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 10 SO, 106 pitches
Strider went through the Phillies lineup like a hot knife through butter. He went 5 2/3 innings without giving up a hit to the Phillies before a Bohm solo shot broke up the no hitter. He is only 23. Strider will be a problem for Philadelphia for years to come.
