Final Score: Cubs 2, Phillies 1

Zack Wheeler is the Phillies ace, and he lived up to that title on Tuesday night in Chicago. Unfortunately, the offense and the bullpen couldn’t hold up their end of the bargain in a 2-1 loss to the Cubs.

In ten innings since returning from the injured list, Wheeler has allowed only one run and one walk, and he has struck out eight batters.

Wheeler was extremely efficient, needing only 62 pitches to complete six innings of one-run ball. He did a good job staying out of trouble, allowing multiple runners to reach in an inning only once.

Chicago jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo homer by Christopher Morel, his 15th of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nick Castellanos got his eighth assist from right field this season, perfectly playing a ball off the wall and making the throw to nail Willson Contreras at second base.

After Bryson Stott walked to lead off the inning, Bryce Harper came through with a two-out double to bring Stott home and tie the game.

Connor Brogdon took over on the mound for Wheeler in the seventh, and he allowed a two-out double to Yan Gomes that gave Chicago the lead once and for all. Brogdon has a 7.24 ERA in 13 2/3 IP since August 21st.

The Cardinals are currently leading the Brewers 6-2. If the result holds, the Phillies’ magic number goes down to seven with nine to play. This was a game the Phillies should have had and it will go down as yet another missed opportunity.

Aaron Nola is scheduled to take the mound Wednesday night. Nola will look to build on his recent success, coming off a start against Atlanta where he delivered six shutout innings.
