Former Phillies infielder Cody Asche is heading back to the majors next season — this time as a member of a big-league coaching staff.

Asche is set to join the Baltimore Orioles dugout in 2023 as the team’s major-league offensive strategy coach, according to a report from Roch Kubatko of MASN on Wednesday. The 32-year-old spent the 2022 season as a minor-league hitting coordinator in the Orioles organization.

After an unexpected winning season in Baltimore, manager Brandon Hyde and the rest of his staff will return in 2023; Asche will serve as the only coaching addition.

A fourth-round draft pick in 2011, Asche debuted for the Phillies as a player in 2013. The left-handed hitter was one of two highly regarded third-base prospects in the Phillies system at the time of his promotion — along with Maikel Franco — that provided some optimism as an aging core declined.

However, Asche never quite panned out in the majors, posting an .684 OPS in four seasons with the Phillies. He appeared in 19 games for the Chicago White Sox in 2017 then bounced around the minors for two years afterward.

Following his playing career, Asche made the jump to coaching. In 2021, the Phillies brought him back the the organization to be the hitting coach in Single-A Clearwater. Asche then made his way to Baltimore for 2022, starting his path to his newest role.
