Phillies will play Cardinals in NL Wild Card Series

The Philadelphia Phillies will return to the postseason for the first time since 2011 against the same opponent that shockingly eliminated them from the playoffs 11 years ago.

By defeating the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night, the San Diego Padres have locked up the second Wild Card spot in the National League. That means that the Phillies are the third and final Wild Card team, and will play a best-of-three series in St. Louis to open the postseason.

Of course, the Phillies are an entirely different organization than they were in 2011. However, Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina were part of the Cardinals team that upset the Phillies in the 2011 NLDS, and are both in the final season of their Hall of Fame careers. The Phillies could send both into retirement.

Incredibly, Game 1 of the series will take place on Oct. 7, exactly 11 years after Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals defeated Roy Halladay and the Phillies in Game 5 of the 2011 NLDS.

Zack Wheeler will get the ball for the Phillies in Game 1 of the series, set to face a lineup that also includes NL MVP candidates Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado.

This NL Wild Card Series — which didn’t exist the last time the Phillies were in the postseason — will be played exclusively at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
