When the Philadelphia Phillies welcome the Atlanta Braves to Citizens Bank Park for Game 3 of the NLDS on Friday, Oct. 14, there will be rally towels given out to what’s certain to be a capacity crowd.
However, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer notes that the rally towels will be red, rather than the white ones that became popular during 2007-2011 run:
This wasn’t a decision by the Phillies, but as Breen notes, a change by Major League Baseball during the decade-long absence that the team had from the postseason. White rally towels have been banned for some time now, seemingly because some players viewed them as distracting.
While Jay Bruce ultimately said that he lost the ball in the lights, the then-Cincinnati Reds’ right fielder had a crucial mistake in Game 2 of the 2010 NLDS, which some suggested could have been because the white rally towels at Citizens Bank Park distracted him. Even Jimmy Rollins told MLB.com‘s Todd Zolecki in 2010 that he would prefer red rally towels to white ones.
And so, it will be red rally towels moving forward at Citizens Bank Park. Unless, of course, you have an old white rally towel still around and decide to bring it along Friday to the first MLB postseason game that the city of Philadelphia has hosted since October of 2011.
