Thanks to Gregg Murphy and Graham Foley of the Phillies social media team, we all get to enjoy the “Franzke cam” this postseason.
Not only do we get to hear the great Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen make legendary calls during the Phillies’ improbable postseason run, but we also get a peak of what it’s like inside the Richie ‘Whitey’ Ashburn broadcast booth from their eyes.
The Franzke cam has caught all the moments, from Rhys Hoskins’ three-run home run against Spencer Strider to the final out of Game 5 of the NLCS.
But the best so far has been Franzke & LA’s reaction to Bryce Harper’s go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning in Sunday’s series-clinching victory over the San Diego Padres.
“Bedlam at the Bank” will go down as an all-time call in baseball history:
The camera turned to an elated Andersen, who was bowing to Harper. “Worth every penny of that contract,” Andersen said. The video ends with the usually stoic Franzke fist pumping and smiling.
The beloved radio pairing have been together since 2006. There were a lot of good times in the beginning. The Phillies were in the postseason for five of Franzke’s first six years with the organization. The two compiled a catalogue of memorable calls within that half decade and while fans have enjoyed replaying the hits during the 11 seasons without postseason baseball, it’s a joy to see the two add on to their legacy.
Thanks to the advent of audio streaming, social media and cell phone videos, it’s much easier than it was 10-15 years ago to capture these memories and relive them over and over again.
The best part is that it’s not over. A few more legendary “Franzke cam” moments could arrive as early as this weekend when the Phillies take on the Houston Astros in the World Series.
