Prior to the 6 p.m. ET deadline to protect prospects from being eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 Draft, the Phillies added one player to their 40-man roster Tuesday afternoon.
Minor leaguer Johan Rojas was added to Philadelphia’s 40-man roster, preventing him from being chosen by another club when the Rule 5 draft takes place on Dec. 7. The Phillies now have 37 players on their 40-man roster.
Rojas, 22, is a speedy center fielder who reached Double-A Reading this past season. With a .328 career on-base percentage, he’s struggled to reach base on a consistent basis in his time through the minors, but still has tools to make him an intriguing player. Rojas is a high-level defensive outfielder and stole an eye-popping 62 bases this minor-league season. He also impressed at the Arizona Fall League, slashing .310/.423/.452 in 12 games.
OF Carlos De La Cruz, LHP Erik Miller and RHP McKinley Moore were among Rule 5 eligible players not added to the team’s 40-man roster. Any eligible player not included on the 40-man roster can be selected by another team in the Rule 5 draft and placed on its 26-man major-league roster for the 2023 season. A player selected in the Rule 5 draft can only be removed from the 26-man roster by clearing waivers and being offered back to his original team.
