The easiest decision of the Phillies offseason has been made.

The club is picking up Aaron Nola’s $16 million 2023 club option, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Nola, 29, will be under contract with the club for at least one more season. He signed a four-year, $45 million extension with a 2023 club option with the Phillies prior to the 2019 season.

It’s possible the Phillies and Nola could work out another extension within the next few months. Through 205 innings pitched over the regular season, Nola compiled a 3.25 ERA and could receive National League Cy Young Award votes.

He pitched well in his last regular season outing to help the Phillies clinch a playoff berth and did not allow an earned run through his first two starts in the playoffs. Nola did seemingly run out of gas in his last three starts, allowing 14 earned runs over 13 innings.

The Phillies have a few more decisions to make over the next week, namely whether or not they will pick up Jean Segura’s $17 million club option (probably not) and if they will pick up their end of Zach Eflin’s $15 mutual option (at least one side will likely decline). The club will also get more clarity on whether or not Bryce Harper needs surgery to repair the partially torn UCL in his right elbow.
