Phillies claim veteran outfielder off waivers from Orioles

The Philadelphia Phillies announced Friday that they’ve claimed outfielder Jake Cave off of waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

Cave, 29, was originally a sixth-round pick of the New York Yankees in 2011, but was acquired by the Minnesota Twins in a trade in March of 2018. Cave made his Major League Debut that same season, ultimately spending parts of five seasons with the team.

Between 2018 and 2022, Cave slashed .235/.297/.411 with 33 home runs, 118 RBIs and a .708 OPS in 335 games for the Twins. The Orioles claimed Cave on waivers back in October, but he ultimately was in their organization for less than two months before again being waived.

Cave has experience at all three outfield positions, which could make him an interesting candidate for Rob Thomson’s bench in 2023. Given how the last few months have gone, it doesn’t appear likely that the Phillies could sneak Cave through waivers if they hoped to option him to Triple-A.

With the addition of Cave, the Phillies now have 38 players on their 40-man roster.
