3 former Phillies make progress on Hall of Fame ballot

Several former Phillies were featured on the 2023 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot. Scott Rolen, who played for the Phillies for seven seasons, was the only player elected to the Hall from the BBWAA ballot. Four other Phillies came up short in the voting. Three received at least 5% of the vote and will remain on the ballot in 2024.

In his second year on the ballot, Jimmy Rollins received 12.9% of the vote. He debuted at 9.7% with 37 votes in 2022. Voters that support Rollins’ case cite counting statistics (2,455 hits and 470 stolen bases), durability (at least 600 plate appearances in 13 seasons) and the fact that he was the face of the Phillies franchise through the golden era of 2007 to 2011.

His longtime double play partner, second baseman Chase Utley, will debut on the Hall of Fame ballot in 2024.

Bobby Abreu, a favorite of analytically-inclined Hall of Fame voters, finished at 15.9%, up from 8.6%. His career .395 on-base percentage and 128 OPS+ make his case an intriguing one, but his candidacy hasn’t received a lot of traction.

Former Phillies closer Billy Wagner saw a huge spike in vote totals from 51% in 2022 to 68.1% in 2023. He has two years left on the BBWAA ballot and has a real chance of getting elected next year.

Jayson Werth was one of seven first-year candidates to receive 0 votes.
