The Mets have tabbed Pat McCarthy to join their radio broadcast team, according to Andrew Marchand of The New York Post.
Pat, of course, is the oldest son of Philadelphia Phillies TV broadcaster Tom McCarthy. Pat has been the voice of the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs since the 2018 season and has filled in as the play-by-play announcer for the Phillies for select TV and radio broadcasts over the past two seasons when his dad has been away calling NFL games.
According to Marchand, Pat “will be the WCBS pre-and-postgame host and swingman game-caller.” It’s a tremendous opportunity for Pat, who has grown up around the Phillies organization, with Tom having been the primary TV voice for the team since Harry Kalas’ passing in April of 2009.
Once upon a time, Tom worked with in the Mets radio booth. After serving in a role pretty similar to the one Pat will be taking for the Phillies from 2001-2005, Tom got a chance to be the backup play-by-play announcer to the aforementioned Rose during Mets broadcasts on WFAN in 2006 and 2007. He used that as a springboard back to the Phillies for the 2008 season. Perhaps this will be the final step before Pat gets a chance to be a full-time play-by-play announcer — whether it’s on TV or the radio — for an MLB club.
