Phillies sign veteran infielder to minor-league deal

The Philadelphia Phillies took a flier on an infielder with big-league experience Wednesday, seemingly inking Vimael Machín to a minor-league deal, which one would think will include an invite to Spring Training in the majors.

Melissa Lockhard of The Athletic was the first to report on the pact, with Machín seeming to confirm it via Twitter Thursday:

As Matt Winkleman notes, the Phillies actually selected Machín in the 2019 Rule-5 Draft, but ended up trading him to the Oakland Athletics, where he’s spent the past three seasons.

Machín saw his most extended big league action with the A’s this past season, slashing .220/.300/.287 with 13 RBIs and 25 walks in 73 games. While he’s primarily played third base, Machín can also play shortstop and second base, making him an interesting addition for the Phillies following last weekend’s trade of Nick Maton to the Detroit Tigers.
