Which Phillies have committed to playing in the World Baseball Classic?

With the World Baseball Classic returning this spring, a number of current Philadelphia Phillies players are set to compete in the international tournament.

Pushed back from 2021 due to COVID, the will resume in March for the first time since 2017 as it gets back to a four-year cycle. This year’s tournament will begin on March 8 with locations in Phoenix, Miami, Tokyo and Taichung, Taiwan.

While final rosters for each team do not have to be set until next month, there have been many players who have announced their commitment to playing in the WBC, as well as some preliminary rosters released by some countries to list potential participants. Here’s a look at which Phillies have been named for the 2023 WBC up to this point:

Team USA

Three current Phillies have committed to playing for the United States as it looks to defend its 2017 WBC championship. Catcher J.T. Realmuto, outfielder Kyle Schwarber and newcoming shortstop Trea Turner will all participate for their home country. Superstar outfielder Bryce Harper previously committed to playing for Team USA, but will no longer be able as he recovers from elbow surgery.

Team Venezuela

Starting pitcher Ranger Suárez and reliever José Alvarado have expressed their desire to compete for their native Venezuela. A pair of lefties whose versatility was vital to the Phillies’ success in the postseason, the two could bring similar value to the WBC.

Team Dominican Republic

Right-hander Seranthony Domínguez is set to participate for the Dominican Republican after reemerging as one of the most electric relievers in the sport in the 2022 postseason.

Team Israel

Phillies backup catcher Garrett Stubbs, a Jewish American, will compete for Israel in the tournament.

Team Mexico

Starting pitcher Taijuan Walker will represent Mexico in the WBC after signing a four-year deal in Philadelphia in December.
